Kowhai Carpentry Ltd is a locally owned residential building company based in Timaru, delivering quality building work across South Canterbury. We specialise in renovations, extensions, new home builds, kitchens, bathrooms, decks, and outdoor living projects, with a strong focus on workmanship, reliability, and clear communication throughout every stage of the build.
Led by owners Matt and Sarah, the Kowhai Carpentry team takes a hands-on approach to every project, combining practical building experience with efficient project management to deliver work to a high standard. Alongside our trusted network of subcontractors and suppliers, we coordinate projects smoothly while maintaining close attention to detail on site.
We understand that building or renovating is a significant investment, and we take pride in creating spaces that are functional, durable, and built to last. Our goal is to make the process as straightforward and stress-free as possible while delivering results our clients can be proud of.
Built on Quality
After supporting Kowhai Carpentry behind the scenes for many years, Sarah has stepped into the industry full time in 2024 and is currently completing her carpentry apprenticeship.
Her transition into the trade reflects a genuine passion for the work and a strong understanding of the business, clients, and day-to-day operation of projects.

Kowhai Carpentry is led by owner and Licensed Building Practitioner, Matt, who brings a hands-on approach and strong attention to detail to every project.
Matt learned his trade working alongside old-school builders known for exceptional finishing work and high standards - values that continue to shape the way Kowhai Carpentry operates today.
Matt remains full time on the tools and actively involved on site throughout each project. This allows him to maintain quality control, work closely with clients and subcontractors, and ensure every job is completed to the high standard Kowhai Carpentry is known for.
